Homemade Salt Water Taffy For Beginners
Homemade Salt Water Taffy Recipe
Saltwater taffy is a delightful and chewy candy that’s easy to make at home. Here’s a simple recipe suitable for someone making it for the first time:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup light corn syrup
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon flavored extract (vanilla, peppermint, strawberry, etc.)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Vegetable oil (for greasing)
Equipment:
- Candy thermometer
- Non-stick saucepan
- Wooden spoon
- Baking sheet or silicone mat
- Scissors or sharp knife
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Pan: Grease or line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. Lightly oil the surface to prevent sticking.
-
Combine Ingredients: In a non-stick saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, butter, water, and salt. Place the pan over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts.
-
Cook the Mixture: Once the sugar has dissolved, insert the candy thermometer into the mixture, making sure it doesn’t touch the bottom of the pan. Continue cooking the mixture without stirring until it reaches 250°F (121°C), which is the hard-ball stage. This should take around 10-15 minutes.
-
Add Flavor and Color: Once the mixture reaches the desired temperature, remove the pan from the heat immediately. Stir in the flavored extract of your choice and, if desired, a few drops of food coloring to achieve the desired hue. Mix well.
-
Pull the Taffy: Pour the hot taffy mixture onto the prepared greased baking sheet or silicone mat. Allow it to cool slightly until it’s cool enough to handle.
-
Pulling Process: Grease your hands with vegetable oil to prevent sticking, then start pulling the taffy. Stretch the candy by pulling it between your hands repeatedly, folding it back onto itself each time. Continue this process until the taffy becomes firm and glossy and it lightens in color.
-
Shape the Taffy: Once the taffy is fully pulled and shiny, quickly shape it into a long rope about 1/2 inch in diameter.
-
Cut the Taffy: Using greased scissors or a sharp knife, cut the taffy rope into bite-sized pieces. You can wrap each piece in wax paper if you prefer.
-
Store the Taffy: Place the wrapped or unwrapped taffy pieces in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out. Store them at room temperature for up to two weeks.
Remember, making salt water taffy can be a bit of a sticky process, so be patient and have fun experimenting with flavors and colors. Enjoy your homemade salt water taffy!
